Marc Copland
Pianist Marc Copland (b. 1948, Philadelphia, Pensylvania) began studying piano at the age of seven, but first made a name for himself in NYC as an alto saxophonist in the mid-1970’s, collaborating with such major players as Ralph Towner, Chico Hamilton and John Abercrombie. Dissatisfied with the harmonic limitations of the instrument, he disappeared for a decade to concentrate on piano, returning to NYC in the mid-eighties with a highly-developed personal piano style. With over 35 albums under his own name and his collaborations with such masters as Drew Gress, Jochen Rueckert, John Abercrombie and Gary Peacock, Marc Copland stands at the forefront of contemporary pianists. Down Beat magazine included the Pirouet CD Night Whispers on its list of the best CDs of the decade.
